The first topic we’ll discuss is: what is the dental pellicle? The dental pellicle as defined (partially,) by Stedman’s Medical Dictionary as a ‘thin skin,’ or ‘film’ on the surface of something. This film is composed of proteins and immune compounds that protect teeth from plaque germs. Acids and toxins are the damaging agents if they contact enamel &/or gum tissue. Plaque germs make these acids and toxins as a by-product of their metabolism. It is good that the dental pellicle keeps these acids and toxins away from the teeth and gums, sort of like the body’s own force field!
